We're living longer - so our pensions have to stretch further
The less than good news is that because we're living longer, our pensions will have to stretch further. In some cases much further!
The Office of National Statistics estimates that over the next 30 years or so, the number of people aged 80 and over - the fastest growing age group - will increase markedly.
Take a look at the chart below. It shows that in 1981 there were just over 1.5 million people aged 80 years and over. Today there are nearly 2.75 million - with no sign that this trend will slow.*
Indeed, there are even estimates that suggest by 2036, more than 3.5 million people will be aged 80 and over.**
